I see/hear words and phrases in dreams and in the hypnagogic state (between wakefulness and sleep). Then I come up with visuals for them.

[I tore the manila checkout card pocket off the inside cover of a discarded library book. I saw a figure in the shape that was left and sketched in pencil until a bear-human presented itself. I looked through my old dreamwords and found “ursanthropy”, which would mean someone who could shapeshift into a bear.]

(I completed this drawing [except for the lettering] and matched it with “Red Oscar of Death”, a phrase from one of my dreamwords notebooks. Years later, I came across the drawing and tried to remember what Oscar Wilde’s hairstyle was like. I googled it and was like, whoa.)
Pencil and colored pencil, 8.5”x11”, 2014
I wrote down the dreamwords “industrial eyes” and later ran across a rubbing I’d done years before of a metal relief from the ‘50s or ‘60s I’d found in a salvage yard or somewhere. I then added what you see in blue to illustrate the dreamwords’ play on the word “industrialize”. No major synchronicity, just a bit of serendipity in the studio.
